Duolingo English Exam Trainer

Remote·Volunteer·10+ hrs / week·Unpaid

At ASA, we're looking for individuals who know the Duolingo English Test deeply and want to put that knowledge to real use. As a Duolingo English Exam Trainer, you'll work with Afghan students who are preparing for the DET as a key step toward university admission abroad. This is not a general English teaching role — we're looking for people who understand the exam inside and out, know what the scoring criteria actually look like, and can teach students how to perform their best on every section.

The Duolingo English Test is accepted by more than 5,000 universities worldwide and is one of the most accessible English proficiency options for Afghan students who face barriers to taking traditional exams. For many of our students, especially girls who have been banned from education, a strong DET score is one of the most important steps toward a future they've been fighting for. Your expertise can make that real.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or have completed an undergraduate degree.
  • A Duolingo English Test score of 130 or above is strongly preferred. If you don't have a DET score, you should be able to demonstrate equivalent English proficiency through another recognized test.
  • Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or training students specifically for the Duolingo English Test. General English teaching experience alone is not enough for this role.
  • Deep familiarity with the DET format, question types, scoring criteria, and the strategies that actually move scores.
  • Ability to commit at least 10 hours per week, including teaching sessions, student feedback, and materials preparation.
  • Comfortable using Zoom, Google Docs, and Discord for remote teaching and communication.
  • Punctual, organized, and professional in how you communicate with students and team members.
  • Genuinely aligned with ASA's mission to support Afghan students through education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver focused Duolingo English Test preparation sessions covering all question types and sections.
  • Teach students the specific strategies and techniques that improve DET performance.
  • Give detailed, personalized feedback on practice responses and student work.
  • Track each student's progress and adjust your approach based on where they're struggling.
  • Prepare and share practice materials, mock tests, and study plans tailored to the DET format.
  • Join occasional instructor meetings or training sessions with the ASA team.
  • Show up as a mentor and motivator for students who are working incredibly hard under difficult circumstances.

What You Will Gain

  • Specialized teaching experience in a high-impact, international setting.
  • Stronger curriculum development, coaching, and communication skills.
  • A formal Certificate of Volunteer Service from Afghan Scholars Academy.
  • A place in a global network of educators doing meaningful work.
  • The knowledge that your expertise directly helped Afghan students, especially girls, access the universities they deserve.

If you know the Duolingo English Test well and want to put that knowledge toward something that genuinely matters, we'd love to hear from you.
