College Mentor

Remote·Volunteer·8–10 hrs / week·Unpaid

Afghan Scholars Academy is looking for experienced and passionate individuals to serve as College Application Mentors for talented Afghan students, especially girls, who are working hard to pursue higher education abroad.

As a mentor, you'll guide students through the college application process — choosing schools, writing essays, preparing documents, and applying for scholarships. Many of our students are first-generation applicants navigating this journey with very little support. Your guidance can genuinely change the direction of their lives.

If you're a college student, recent graduate, or experienced mentor who cares about educational equity and social impact, we'd love to have you join our mission.

This role is a great fit for people who understand the college admissions process — especially Common App, personal statements, and scholarship applications — and want to support students one-on-one or in small groups.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in or have completed an undergraduate degree. Preference for those who have gone through the college application process themselves.
  • Strong understanding of at least one of the following: Common App or UCAS, personal statements and supplemental essays, or scholarship and financial aid applications.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to commit 8 to 10 hours per week to mentoring, essay review, and follow-ups with mentees.
  • Organized, dependable, and responsive — students are counting on you.
  • Familiarity with tools like Google Docs, Zoom, Discord, or project management platforms is a plus.
  • A genuine sense of empathy and commitment to ASA's mission of empowering Afghan students through education.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students through the college application process, including building college lists based on fit and eligibility, and giving feedback on personal statements, supplemental essays, and resumes.
  • Help students with scholarship applications and interview preparation.
  • Track your mentees' progress and stay in regular contact with them.
  • Work with other ASA team members to make sure students are getting well-rounded support.
  • Join occasional training or coordination meetings to strengthen your mentorship approach.
  • Encourage students and help them believe in their own potential, even when the odds feel stacked against them.

What You Will Gain

  • Real, meaningful mentorship experience with students from underserved backgrounds.
  • Stronger leadership, communication, and advising skills.
  • A Certificate of Volunteer Service from Afghan Scholars Academy.
  • Connections with a global network of educators, mentors, and people doing meaningful work.
  • The knowledge that you made a real difference in the lives of Afghan youth, especially girls who have been banned from education at home.
  • A deeper understanding of global education access and what social justice work actually looks like in practice.
